The US Congress passed a billion-dollar social and climate package, giving President Joe Biden a major political victory.
After the Senate, the House of Representatives in Washington yesterday (Otzeit) also voted in favor of the law, which, among other things, provides about $370 billion (about €359 billion) for energy security and climate protection. The bill passed the House of Congress by a majority of 220 to 207.
Stage victory before midterm elections
The Senate had already voted by a minimal majority on the package on Sunday, which, in addition to billions for climate protection, also provides $64 billion for health care. Now Biden still needs to sign the law and put it into effect.
The US president had originally aimed for a much larger climate and social package, but had to cut his plans significantly in the face of internal party resistance. The law now passed represents, however, the biggest investment in the fight against global warming in the history of the United States. A few months before parliamentary elections in November, the passage of the law, even in its simplified version, is a great success for the president and his Democratic Party.
