Video A year after the Taliban returned Afghan women refuse

Video. A year after the Taliban returned, Afghan women refuse to be their “hostages”.

“We will oppose the tyranny of the Taliban to our last breath,” screams Monesa Mubarez, a women’s rights activist, on the streets of the Afghan capital Kabul. This activist has been demonstrating against the Taliban’s oppression of women since they regained power in the country exactly one year ago.

Work and school are now reserved for men and boys in the countryside. An unbearable situation for Gulestan Safari, who was a police officer until last year. She recalls how the Taliban “sent out” women who demanded the right to their jobs by “promising to wear the burqa”. “How long do women have to sit still at home” before regaining the freedoms they enjoyed until last year, she wonders. She begs the international community to “save” her.
