If Emmanuel Macron confirms that France is not at war with Russia, some French are preparing to go and fight in Ukraine. A will that includes risks. According to information from Europe 1, public services are closely following these departures, in particular DGSI, the general direction of internal security.

There is no typical profile

It is the one in charge, together with the DGSE, foreign intelligence and DRM, military intelligence. A DGSI team is closely following Facebook groups of volunteers who want to join the Ukrainian resistance. We are currently talking about about fifty French people. In fact, there is no typical profile. There are certainly ex-soldiers and a handful of active-duty soldiers from the Foreign Legion, followed by DRSD, Army Intelligence.

For the rest, we find both “humanitarian” profiles that want to help the Red Cross, for example, but also French people without history, or even a small number of people known to the DGSI for their membership in far-right movements. It should be noted that these profiles seem to be divided between pro-Putin and pro-Ukrainians, fascinated by the Azov Battalion, a unit known to welcome neo-Nazi extremists in the service of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.

There is no S file at this stage

Finally, the ultra-left is also well represented, with about fifty people followed by DGSI, the profile emerging the most: they would be around thirty at the moment. No S file found at this time. As for the law, public services do not have the means to prevent departures. On the other hand, returnees may be involved in mercenary or criminal terrorist groups if their actions in Ukraine are contrary to French law.
