Disney-branded hand sanitizer recalled due to carcinogen

FDA testing found the presence of benzene in the branded product The Mandalorian and methanol in the Mickey Mouse version. The company was informed of the results at the end of February.

Benzene is a carcinogen, and significant exposure can cause leukemia, bone marrow blood cancer and life-threatening blood disorders, the FDA said.

Significant exposure to methanol can cause serious health problems, including nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, coma, seizures, permanent blindness, permanent central nervous system damage, or death. The FDA found that “young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute are at greatest risk of methanol poisoning.”

The affected batches of hand sanitizer had already been withdrawn from the market for “unrelated commercial reasons,” and the company has not received any customer complaints about the Disney products, according to Best Brands. According to the company, both batches were produced by a third-party manufacturer.

The company is warning customers to use and discard all items from batch 20E21 with an expiration date of September 30, 2022 of The Mandalorian hand sanitizer, which contains 68% ethyl alcohol and is available in 2.11 liquid ounce green and blue bottles .

Lot 20D21 Mickey Mouse hand sanitizer with an expiration date of June 30, 2022 in 2.11 fl oz blue bottles should also be discarded.

Customers who have product issues may also report their experiences to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
