Lithuania becomes the first EU country to cut supplies from Moscow and urges others to follow its lead: “If we can do it writes its president on Twitter the rest of Europe can too”
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda also called on the rest of the European Union to follow the example of the Baltic States on Twitter.
The decision is justified by a press release from the Lithuanian Ministry of Energy: “In search of complete energy independence from Russian gas and
in response to Russian energy blackmail in Europe and the war in Ukraine
reads Lithuania has completely abandoned Russian gas: the Lithuanian gas transmission system has been functioning without Russian gas imports since the beginning of this month.
That said Energy Minister Dainius Kreivys
it is a turning point in the history of energy independence
from Lithuania:
“We are the first EU country among Gazprom supplier countries to guarantee independence
from Russian gas supplies and is the result of constant longterm cooperation in the field of energy policy and timely decisions on infrastructure.
Data provided by the Lithuanian gas transmission system operator Amber Grid shows that Russian gas imports for Lithuania’s needs via the connection with Belarus amounted to 0 MWh. All of Lithuania’s gas needs are met through the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Klaipėda.
