Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has tested negative for drugs.
INTERNATIONAL – Something to quench the controversy a little more. Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin finally tested negative on a drug test she took to “allay suspicions”, her entourage said on Monday, August 22, after video showing their partying was released in his country unleashed a wave of criticism.
Sanna Marin’s urine was tested for the presence of various drugs including cocaine, amphetamines, cannabis and opioids, Iida Vallin, a special adviser to the prime minister, told AFP.
“Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s drug test of August 19, 2022 did not reveal the presence of drugs,” Sanna Marin’s office said in a statement, adding that the results were signed by a doctor. “The test was a comprehensive test. We didn’t choose how the test was conducted,” added Iida Vallin.
A leaked video last week showing 36-year-old Sanna Marin dancing and partying with a group of friends and celebrities has sparked controversy around the world. Some then interpreted the comments heard in the video as referring to narcotics, which were the subject of heated debates on social media and firmly rejected by the Prime Minister.
“To clear up any suspicions, I took a drug test today,” Sanna Marin told reporters on Friday.
A movement of support in the face of attack
The Prime Minister had previously said she “spent an evening with friends” and that the videos were “shot at private locations”. However, she admitted to drinking alcohol.
Aside from denying having used drugs, she added that she did not observe any drug use by those present. “I never did drugs in my life, not even when I was young,” she said.
Sanna Marin, who became prime minister in 2019, had previously come under fire after parties at her official residence. She was also heavily criticized in December 2021 when it was revealed she had been dancing until the end of the night she was exposed to Covid-19.
A poll commissioned by Finnish television channel MTV3 at the time found that two-thirds of those polled viewed his evening as a “serious mistake”. In the last few days, however, a hashtag has appeared on the internet that supports the initiative by Finns and Danes.
Through short videos posted to social media, these women dance, party and drink to offset the often misogynistic criticism of Sanna Marin’s personal life. All under the hashtag “SolidarityWithSanna”.
