The Argentinian college student pictured in the ‘Girl Explaining’ meme has finally revealed how the viral photo came about.
The hilarious meme features Denise Sánchez apparently yelling in her ex-boyfriend’s ear and while stretching her arm forward while attending a beach festival in the city of Claromecó, Buenos Aires in February 2019.
The 21-year-old told her boyfriend was actually tired because it was getting late and she was actually singing along to a song when a young woman standing in front of them posed for a photo she was unknowingly holding Photobombed.
“I remember she uploaded it to Twitter. She said: “What a disappointment. They messed up the picture because these two kids were at the back with that face,” Sánchez said during a phone interview Monday. “She was laughing because we came out the back of the photo and she was pretty but she couldn’t post it because we were in it.”

The photo shows her screaming in her former partner’s ear as she was actually singing to him while he was tired of partying too much. The image was shared on Twitter a few days after the festival, before finding its place in the Meme Hall of Fame

The nutrition major first saw the infamous image as a meme on the Instagram account of a nutritionist she follows.
“That’s when I realized how it went viral and a lot of sites with memes from Argentina started uploading it,” Sánchez said.
According to the meme database Know Your Meme, the photo was primarily featured in memes produced by Spanish-speaking social media users.
The picture finally exploded on US social media networks last week.
US social media users have finally gotten their hands on the famous image of Argentinian college student Denise Sánchez and her former boyfriend, and made memes out of it. Cricket Wireless joined the fun with a post to lure customers from competing companies
Ryan Thompson, a Democrat running for the South Carolina state House of Representatives, used the image for a meme he posted to his Twitter account Sunday night to take voters to court ahead of November’s midterm elections.
“DID YOU SEE A 22 YEAR OLD CAN RUN FOR OFFICE HERE IN MYRTLE BEACH?!? HOW A LOCAL 22 YEAR OLD STANDS UP AGAINST INSTITUTION AND DEMANDS BETTER DEMANDS FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS!?? IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW HIM ON SOCIAL MEDIA, YOU MUST DO IT BECAUSE HE POSTS MEMES AND…” he wrote.
Denise Sánchez told that she has no issues with her 2019 photo in which she appears to be yelling at her ex-boyfriend, which is now being used as a funny meme because “I take everything very calmly and with great grace”.

A wireless carrier jumped in the fun to lure customers away from competing providers.
“MY BOYFRIEND WAS LIKE ‘PREPAID IS WACK’ AND I WAS LIKE ‘FAM, CRICKET HAS 5G, GREAT PLANS AND ALL THE SMARTPHONES IN GAME’ AND THEN HE COMPLETELY CHANGED,” Cricket Wireless tweeted on Friday night.
Another person took to Twitter to use the image as a joke about the controversial NFT phenomenon.
“I BOUGHT A CUTE PICTURE OF A PENGUIN ON THE BLOCKCHAIN EARLY THIS YEAR. IT SAYS NFT HAVE YOU HEARD FROM YOU,” they wrote. “I think it’s worthless now, but I’m doing it for the art.”
For now, Sánchez is taking it in stride, having become the center of the world’s hilarious meme. She even admits she has yet to caption the image herself to use on her own social media platforms.
“The truth is I take everything very calmly and with great grace,” she said. “I don’t mind being exposed because I’m quite outgoing. So I’m not ashamed. The context they put it in made me laugh a lot.
