At the opening of the Alpbach European Forum yesterday, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) made it clear that sanctions against Russia must be maintained. But that would have to affect Russia more than the EU. The fact that appropriate measures are needed is out of the question for him, according to Nehammer.
“We have to do this,” Nehammer said. “Imposing sanctions on Russia is the most peaceful way to make our protest clear. We used to be at war,” the chancellor said. The only thing that can be disputed is the accuracy of the sanctions. In recent days, top state politicians in the ÖVP have questioned the sanctions.
A guest in Alpbach was the President of Moldova, which as a neighboring country was particularly challenged by a large number of displaced people from Ukraine. Maia Sandu’s message was that all of Europe must help Ukraine because Ukraine is defending all of Europe. When asked about the danger Russia posed to her country, Sandu indicated a certain impotence.
