The MPLA party called for preserving the peace achievements in Angola

Luanda, April 4 (Prensa Latina) The People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) today called for turning the next general elections in the country into a party of democracy, with citizens’ demonstrations in favor of peace and development.

In a message commemorating April 4, the twentieth anniversary of the end of the armed conflict, the ruling party said the year 2022 would hold “great civil and political challenges,” with the focus on holding parliamentary elections next August .

On the occasion of the anniversary, the organization reaffirmed its responsibility to continue to lead the way in spreading ethical and patriotic values, capable of contributing to the formation of new generations.

For the Political Bureau of the MPLA Central Committee, there is a need to enhance joint efforts to promote national unity and a culture of peace to meet the challenges of economic growth and productive diversification.

Therefore, he called for the engagement of all Angolans in the process of strengthening citizenship and building an increasingly developed, democratic and inclusive society.

The statement on April 4, the day of peace and national reconciliation, stressed the importance of ensuring respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and public security.

These conquests came at the cost of the blood shed by many of Angola’s finest sons, the party recalled, praising the direct or indirect contribution of the national armed forces to ending the armed conflict (1975-2002).

After 27 years of civil war, the MPLA-led government and opposition Unita forces signed a memorandum of understanding on April 4, 2002, amending the Lusaka Protocol to lay down their arms and begin the peace process.

The original contract was signed on November 20, 1994 in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, but without achieving the desired goals.
