On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the independence of Vietnam, in which he read the Declaration of Independence of the United States, the country he would fight two decades later, and reaffirmed his leadership in the fight against the French colonizers, culminating in the legendary victory by Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
