UN calls for serious negotiations to reach peace in Ukraine

UNITED NATIONS, April. – UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that serious negotiations are urgently needed to achieve peace in Ukraine and end the serious impact of this conflict on the world economy.

The highest representative of the United Nations spoke at length before the Security Council about the strong impact that this conflict is having worldwide and especially in the developing countries.

As the minister stressed, there is an increasing urgency to silence the guns and he also reiterated his call for a humanitarian ceasefire, according to Prensa Latina.

Because of the conflict, food prices are skyrocketing on the world market, as are gas and oil prices, the Portuguese diplomat stressed.

The war in Ukraine is already emerging as one of the greatest challenges in recent history, causing deplorable loss of life and its vital infrastructure and resulting in the displacement of about 10 million people, he stressed.

We must act now, the Secretary-General of the United Nations affirmed, regretting that the divisions in the Security Council are preventing decisions on this.

Civilians in Ukraine are paying a heavy price, Guterres said, calling for an independent investigation into events in the city of Bucha near Kyiv.

In addition, he called for ensuring the protection of the human rights of all people and bringing violators to justice.

Several images were released last Saturday night of bodies lying in the streets of the Ukrainian city of Bucha, from which Russian troops withdrew on March 30.

The Russian Defense Ministry denounced it as a “staging” for Western media.

Prosecutor General of Ukraine Irina Venedíktova said the day before that 410 bodies of murdered civilians were found in the outskirts of Kyiv.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities have labeled the released images as montage and provocation and denied that civilians were mistreated while the city remained under their troops’ control.

The West is trying to sabotage Russia-Ukraine negotiations by fanning the hype over Bucha’s provocation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday.

The senior Russian official noted that the provocation in Bucha took place just as Ukraine was presenting potential peace proposals, including those related to Crimea.

If such attempts by the West continue, there is a risk that the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will repeat the fate of the Minsk agreements, which “should not happen,” the Russian minister was quoted as saying by Sputnik.
