Brussels examines price ceilings for Russian gas

In view of the worsening situation on energy markets, the EU Commission is considering measures to limit the price of gas. It is about the possibility of reaching an agreement on a maximum purchase price for Russian gas, according to an internal document made available to the dpa news agency.

Another option is to cap the price on European trading platforms under certain conditions. The second option, in particular, could be used as an emergency measure to avoid further price increases. The first could lead mainly to limiting Russian state revenues from energy deals.

According to the paper, a price cap on Russian gas could be implemented by law – similar to sanctions. Alternatively, the EU could negotiate prices and volumes with Russia as an individual buyer. However, the paper warns that Russia could no longer deliver if there was a price cap.
