The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Ukraine’s ambassador to Budapest, Lyubov Nepop.
“It’s time for Ukrainian leaders to stop insulting Hungary,” Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto wrote on Facebook today. “Insult” apparently means that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in recent days to clearly side with Ukraine, which is being attacked by Russia.
Close alliance with Putin
The right-wing head of government in Budapest has developed a close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years. He only halfheartedly condemned Russian aggression against Ukraine.
At the same time, he banned the delivery of weapons through Hungary directly to neighboring Ukraine. Alongside Austria, Hungary is one of the few EU countries that has not expelled any Russian diplomats since the start of the Russian war against Ukraine.
