The Mayo Clinic defines aphasia as “a disorder that affects your ability to communicate,” which “can affect your speech as well as the way you write and understand both spoken and written language.”
The actor’s family didn’t reveal what caused his bout of aphasia, which has a number of possible causes. The condition can occur after a head injury or stroke, or be a precursor to a brain tumor or Alzheimer’s disease. Patients living with this condition are usually treated with speech therapy and taught how to communicate non-verbally.
The actor’s family took to Instagram last week to reveal he is retiring from acting following his aphasia diagnosis.
