The Ukrainian authorities continue to analyze the bodies found in Izium after the pro-Russian occupiers left. Although Ukrainians initially thought the dead were “due to the bombings at the start of the Russian offensive,” most bear the marks of brute force, according to our special correspondent in Kharkiv, Gulliver Cragg.

The residents also told him about “very brutal behavior” on the part of the Russian occupiers.

Ukraine is continuing offensive operations in the north-east of the country while Russian forces have established a defensive line between the Oskil River and the town of Svatove, British military intelligence has said.

“Russia probably considers it important to maintain control of this area as it is crossed by one of the few main supply routes that Russia still controls from the Belgorod region of Russia,” the Defense Ministry said in a regular update on Twitter.

“Russia will probably try to defend this area stubbornly, but it is uncertain whether the Russian front-line forces have sufficient reserves or morale to withstand a new concerted Ukrainian attack,” he added.
