The Russian chess ace has been sentenced to 22 years for the murder of a famous psychologist from New School

The chess ace, who stabbed and stabbed a world-famous psychology professor to death with a hammer at a man’s home in Brooklyn for $ 2.2 million, was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Mirzo Atadjanov, 32, was convicted on Thursday of killing 66-year-old Jeremy D. Safran on May 7, 2018, after breaking into the home of Professor Prospect Park South, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney office.

He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on November 4, 2021.

Atadjanov stabbed Safran, a professor at the New School in new York, twice in the chest and three times in the stomach while the man trained in the basement. He then reportedly claimed to have done so in self-defense during an immigration dispute.

Atadjanov also claimed that he was “accidentally” asked to do some electrical work, but later police said the two men did not know each other, according to the New York Daily News.

He was reportedly found by police, covered in blood, in a closet in Safran’s basement after Safran’s wife, Jennifer, called 911.

According to authorities, Atadjanov, who is described as both a professional chess player and a coach, was eventually charged with murder and burglary.

“This accused broke into the victim’s home and when he stood up, he stabbed him to death in vain,” said District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. Picture 11.

“We hope that today’s sentence brings some consolation to his heartbroken family. The defendant is responsible for his actions. ”

It is alleged that Atadjanov was also surrounded by several tools when he was found, including a hammer, Picture 11 reported.

Saffron died of stab wounds to his torso from the chief medical officer’s office, AMNI reported.

Atadjanov claims to have graduated from Tajik State Medical University in 2012 with a medical degree and received a master’s degree in biology from Brooklyn College in 2017.

“My goal is to get my PhD in cardiology in New York and start my internship. “I also enjoy teaching biology,” he wrote on his LinkedIn page.

At the time of Safran Atadjanov’s death, he had been released from custody for only two years for attempting to rape a tourist, according to authorities.

In December 2016, Atadjanov was arrested and charged with attempting to rape, assault and forcibly touch a woman he met at couchsurfing.com, The New York Daily News reported.

The woman, who was 23 at the time, was staying with him and told police she had to push him away with a knife.

The charges against Atadjanov did not remain and were dropped when he was indicted.

At the time, the family described him as a devout Muslim who focused on his studies.

Atadjanov’s mother, Gulya, refused to believe what happened in a telephone interview with the newspaper New York Post“It simply did not happen. He didn’t. He’s a smart boy. He has a master’s degree in biology.

“He was planning to become a nurse.” He was a doctor in our country, a cardiologist. He was the best chess player in the republic.

“I’m just shocked, I don’t know what to think. Burglary? We are not poor people. We are educated people. We are decent.

Safran’s neighbor, Doreen Giliano, told New York Daily News she saw an intruder enter the house and immediately sent a message to Mr. Saffron’s wife, Jennifer, to warn her.

“He parked the car, walked along the block, came back and walked down the alley. Then he got back in his car and sat there for three hours, “Giuliano said.

“He went down the alley and put something in his trunk and looked from left to right, from left to right, and then he came back and went in the side door.”

Guiliano said she asked Jennifer Safran if there was a trader who worked at her home, and when she replied, her neighbor said she had a problem.

She said Jennifer Safran and her 18-year-old daughter had run away from the house and the young woman noticed that the light in the basement was going out.

Police were called and arrived in less than a minute, Guiliano said, where Jeremy Safran was found dead.

Atadjanov is believed to have followed Safranov’s daughter to the property, where he spoke briefly with her in an apparent effort to discuss the home.

Guiliano said she saw the man lurking in the area for about three hours before finally entering the Safran family home.

Real estate websites say the home costs $ 2,242,180.

‘I saw [Atadzhanov] when he got out of the car, it was as if he was coming from the supermarket, “said neighbor Gillian Daniels.

“It’s shocking because we’ve been here for 24 years … You get so smug you don’t think about it.”

“It’s horrifying,” said another witness to the scene. “It’s a great looking neighborhood and it’s a great place to live.

“But this is New York, and you just can’t take your vigilance off.”
