A magnitude 6.9 earthquake was recorded in Mexico

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake was recorded in Mexico on Thursday morning, the national seismological service said, but no casualties or damage were initially reported.

A powerful tremor shook the capital of Mexico, home to 22 million people, three days after a strong earthquake on Monday September 19, the anniversary of the two deadly earthquakes of 1985 and 2017.

On Thursday, residents of Mexico City were caught sleeping. Many of them rushed into the street in their pajamas when they heard the alarm sirens.

The epicenter was in the state of Michoacan in western Mexico, 84 kilometers from the city of Coalcoman, the seismological service said. Monday’s 7.7 magnitude earthquake that killed two people also happened in Michoacan.

The seismological service revised upwards the magnitude of Thursday’s earthquake, originally measured at 6.5.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said official helicopters flew over the city but no casualties or damage were spotted immediately.

“At the moment there is no damage in the city. I will continue to provide information,” she said on Twitter.

Monday’s powerful tremor shook Mexico City, an hour after millions took part in a prevention exercise organized each year by authorities to mark the anniversaries of the September 19, 1985 and 2017 earthquakes.
