In New York, a man accidentally shot and killed a 16-year-old girl and injured two other teenagers on the street. According to police, the man got into an altercation with a person across the street in the Bronx on Friday and fired several shots. The bullets hit the 16-year-old girl, another 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy who had just come home from school.

As New York Police Chief Keechant Sewell told reporters at the scene, the 16-year-old was shot in the chest. His two companions were injured in the leg and buttocks. All three were taken to hospital, where the most seriously injured girl succumbed to her injuries.

Initially there were no arrests. Police are using surveillance camera footage as part of the search.

It was the second time in ten days that a minor had been killed by stray bullets in New York. A 12-year-old boy was shot dead while sitting in a parked car in Brooklyn on Thursday of last week. A 20-year-old woman who was in the car with him was injured.

Crime in New York has increased sharply since the start of the corona pandemic. According to police, there were 296 incidents involving firearms in the east coast metropolis of the United States from January to March. In the same quarter last year, there were 260.
