Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukr
UNITED NATIONS, 24 September (RHC) Egyptian Foreign Minister and President of the next climate summit Sameh Shoukry warned of the dangers small island nations face due to temperature changes and environmental impacts on the planet, an official statement said today.
According to Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid, Shoukry met with representatives of the Alliance of Small Island States at a meeting in New York as part of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
The head of Egyptian diplomacy stressed the importance of discussing the matter at the United Nations climate change conference due to be held in that North African country next November.
Faced with this situation, he called for greater coordination to mitigate the loss and damage caused by climate change on these islands.
As part of his agenda, the foreign minister also spoke separately yesterday with the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, and with the International Organization’s Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen.
During the meeting with Wennesland, the situation in Palestine was addressed, in particular the current state of the city of Jerusalem, Abu Zeid stressed.
The two sides exchanged views on ways to revive the peace process and break the deadlock to resolve the Palestinian issue in line with the two-state solution, he stressed.
The Egyptian spokesman said the minister and Pedersen agreed on the urgency of ending the Syrian crisis. (Source:PL)
