Following in the footsteps of Jim Carrey and Bruce Willis, actor Mark Wahlberg has revealed in a new interview he’ll be retiring from big-screen roles sooner rather than later.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the actor says that after three decades on the big screen, he’s been contemplating the end of his career — especially with four kids to think about and spend time with.
Much like Carrey’s comments last week, Wahlberg points out that future roles must be fulfilling, tempting him to spend months away from home to film them. When asked if he could possibly leave Hollywood, he says:
“Probably sooner rather than later … It has to be something special to really make me leave my home, to leave these guys behind, because that’s the biggest sacrifice for sure.”
His recent film, Father Stu, which speaks of his Catholic faith, offers an idea of the type of more personal film projects 50-year-old Wahlberg could focus on.
“I feel like this is starting a new chapter for me because now it can help people do things like that – real substance.” I definitely want to focus on making more. I wouldn’t necessarily say just faith-based content, but things that help people. Hopefully this film opens the door not only for me but also for many other people in Hollywood to make more meaningful content.”
Wahlberg has had short breaks in the past but has racked up around 60 credits since the rapper/model broke out on “The Basketball Diaries,” “Fear,” and “Boogie Nights.”
An exception to these more personal projects could well be a sequel to Uncharted, should Sony move forward with it.
