Cuba condemns the dangerous precedent for Russia’s exclusion from the Human Rights Council

Cuba. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez has denounced via Twitter the dangerous precedent set by the exclusion of Russia from the Human Rights Council, a country considering effective, fair and peaceful diplomatic solutions to the current crisis in Europe.

“Exclusions are useless, on the contrary, they damage the credibility and the ability of the international system to create peace,” the head of state published on the social network, adding that “the decision taken this Wednesday has set a dangerous precedent and the conflict in Ukraine is being fueled even more,” said the President.

The United Nations General Assembly met last Thursday, at the request of the United States, to vote on a draft resolution to suspend Russia as a member of the Human Rights Council as a result of the Ukraine conflict. The vote, carried out with 93 countries in favour, 24 against and 58 abstentions. Countries including Cuba, Bolivia, Nicaragua, among others, voted against, and Brazil, El Salvador, and Mexico abstained, to name a few.

For his part, Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso, Cuba’s representative to the United Nations, reiterated that Cuba has always advocated and worked towards a Human Rights Council capable of addressing the complex challenges faced by the international community in this area , from which no country is exempt.

He said that this decision in no way favors the search for a peaceful, negotiated and lasting solution to the conflict in Ukraine, let alone a climate of cooperation, dialogue and understanding that must prevail when human rights issues are raised.

Russia was elected a member of the Human Rights Council in 2020 by 158 votes in favour, and now its suspension is being carried out by a smaller amount.

The Russian representative said in his speech that this decision presupposes a continuation of US neo-colonialism and dismissed the allegations of fraud and forgery.
