It’s only been two years and two months since the first Sonic The Hedgehog movie hit theaters, just weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic brought everything to a halt (it definitely wasn’t Sonic’s fault, right?), and now we have Sonic The Hedgehog 2 racing into theaters. Who would have thought we’d make it to this day? The day when a second Sonic movie will light up the box office charts and also the pandemic, which was just a wink in our collective eye in February 2020, has become an ever-present topic that we can and will never escape?

Anyway, Sonic 2 has made $71 million, which is more than the first film made on its debut. That’s pretty interesting, but as is always the case these days, the other movies that hit theaters have struggled to make a lot of money themselves. Last week’s winner, Morbius, fell more than 70 percent to $10 million and ended up with a total of $57 million after two weeks. Third place went to last week’s runner-up The Lost City, which fell to $9 million after three weeks for a total of $68 million.

Only in fourth place do we get to this weekend’s other high-profile debut, Michael Bay’s Ambulance, which opened at a rather dismal $8.7 million. That’s bad, but it’s at least a few million dollars ahead of The Batman (thought the film already grossed $350 million more than Ambulance). Sixth place went to Everything Everywhere All At Once, which is skyrocketing as it expands its theatrical release. It’s still only made $8 million, but that’s set to increase as it opens in more locations.

The rest of the top 10 is boring (we don’t have much to say about a Selena re-release or a Spider-Man movie), but one amazing thing we’d like to highlight is that Aline, the Jackie Jormp- The Jomp biopic about Celine Dion has apparently been in theaters for 20 weeks and just got an incredible bump. Last weekend, just playing in one theater, he made $24. This week it probably played in the same theater and fetched $20,785. That’s an increase of 86,000 percent. The real Celine Dion could only dream of pulling something like this off!
