Marilyn Monroe admirer Courtney Stodden, 28, said she won’t be watching Blonde. According to the model, the production treats the ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ star with disrespect.
“As someone who understands what it’s like to be sexually exploited and then have people make a joke of you when you’re not a joke, I find it a little disrespectful to engage in it,” he said in an interview with page six.
The film has caused controversy since its debut in the Netflix catalog last Wednesday. Fans and critics point to misogyny and a “cruel portrayal” of Marilyn Monroe.
“Given all the humiliation and horror Marilyn Monroe endured in her 36 years, it’s a relief that she doesn’t have to suffer the vulgarities of ‘Blonde,’ the latest necrophilic entertainment, in order to exploit her,” Manohla Dargis wrote in a review of the New York Times.
Based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates, the production brings a fictionalized vision of the tragedies experienced by the actress. Some critics have even pointed out that the film insists on an antiabortion and sexist look. That’s why Courtney Stodden defends the boycott of the film.
“I would ask people not to see the film because this is not Marilyn Monroe, this is not her story. It’s fictional and meant to make her something she wasn’t.”
