Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both scored hat-tricks as Manchester City built a five-goal lead before settling in a 6-3 derby win over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Haaland finished the game with three goals and two assists while Kevin De Bruyne set up two of the Norwegian’s big goals. Haaland now has 14 goals in eight Premier League games, 18 below the league record for a 38-game season set by Mohamed Salah in 2017-18.

Antony had the game at 4-1 after 56 minutes but it was 6-1 before Anthony Martial scored two late goals off the bench.

Undefeated champions Man City are a point behind Arsenal, eight ahead of sixth-placed United. Man Utd have played a game fewer.

Erling Haaland’s goal record hunt is real: Thirteen goals in eight games? For real?!? Erling Haaland is on fire and every single Premier League defense should fear. We spent a whole season wondering what Man City would look like with a finisher at center forward last season and now we’ve found it’s absolutely ridiculous.

Erik ten Hag handcuffs his team: Look, in hindsight it will always be 8:20. We understand that, but expecting to play toe-to-toe with City away from home, using Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay in the heart of your midfield while leaving Fred and Casemiro on the bench was almost absurd. Eriksen’s defensive skills weren’t up to the task, leaving McTominay running around like a maniac. The ball barely found its way to the front four, which was United’s only hope of keeping up with the hosts. Antony’s incredible goal is a cruel reminder of what could have been for the young ETH team.

Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne unfair: That’s the lesson. Unfair.

Can 2022/23 Manchester City oust 2008/09 Barcelona as Pep’s masterpiece? It’s hard to imagine a better season than Barcelona’s LaLiga and Champions League doubles. Barcelona were stunned on the opening day but didn’t lose again until February 21. They did not lose a major European Cup match, nor fell behind a round of 16. Of the five league losses, four came after building a 13-point lead in mid-February. Even 105 goals plus 70 goal difference in La Liga doesn’t change the notion that this city could top most of those numbers. City are currently on track for 133 goals and a goal difference close to triple figures, despite not having played against Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea or Arsenal. It’s also in second place (laughing emoji).

Tactical focus

Rodri’s absence for Man City threatened to open United but midfield duo Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen were left without a helm by Erik ten Hag (see what we learned above). That gave City plenty of freedom when they stayed calm with the ball, which they characteristically did, and the departure of Raphael Varane meant the visitors would find themselves in a lot of trouble.

Key storylines and star players

Despite two disappointing draws (Newcastle and Aston Villa), it was an unbeaten start to the 2022/23 season for Man City, who still lead the PL in possession (66.4 percent per game) while also becoming an unstoppable offensive force from last place season (14 goals in the first seven games) up to this season (23). That’s not to say it was easy as Manchester City underwent a tactical shift of their own to better address the tall Norwegian’s poaching abilities. Although they have already been forced to produce results on a number of occasions this season, it has highlighted a newfound spontaneity for a side as regimented as any in the world. Will that freedom eventually earn Pep Guardiola his first Champions League title since 2011 and perhaps a third consecutive PL title (and a fifth in six years)?

For Manchester United, the Ten Hag era was already a wild roller coaster ride, short as it was. The back-to-back defeats were one thing, but the miserable performances were the root of the dissatisfaction. Alongside the four straight wins, the Dutchman has also opted for a midfield setup, with Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen (effectively) operating in a double turn, with Bruno Fernandes being the most advanced of the three. It certainly brought defensive stability, but more importantly, the change revealed a deadly counter. Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Fernandes each netted twice during the winning run and new boy Antony is having fun on his debut too. With back space (and the right serve from deep), Ten Hag could have his first recipe for success (though very differently from him).
