For six months there was a ceasefire in Yemen’s civil war, which has lasted for years. The ceasefire is expiring and the warring parties have not been able to agree on an extension. The UN wants to continue the negotiations.
The ceasefire in Yemen will not be extended for the time being. According to the United Nations, the warring parties failed to agree to extend the ceasefire after six months. The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, expressed regret and said he would continue to campaign for a deal. “A prolonged and extended ceasefire would have given decisive advantages to the population.”
The Swedish diplomat urged the warring parties to “fulfill their obligation to the Yemeni people and seek all avenues for peace”.
World’s worst humanitarian crisis according to the UN
The ceasefire took effect in April and was extended twice. It has given the country’s people breathing space in the war that has been going on since 2014. An alliance of Arab states led by Saudi Arabia is fighting with Yemeni government troops against the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.
According to the UN, around 380,000 people have been killed since the start of the conflict, most of them as a direct result of the fighting. Millions of people had to flee. The UN ranks the war and its aftermath in Yemen as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
