As of 12:00 this Sunday (October 2nd), Brasília time, voting in the first round of the 2022 elections had already ended in 59 countries, the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) announced. Voters abroad only elect the office of President of the Republic.
This year polling stations were set up in 181 foreign cities. According to the electoral judiciary, more than 697,000 voters will be able to vote abroad, an increase of 39.21% compared to the previous general election in 2018.
The organization of elections abroad, such as the sending of ballot boxes and the opening of polling stations, is the responsibility of the state electoral court of the federal district (TREDF). The body said it had already started receiving the first ballot boxes from other countries. However, the publication of the official results should not begin until 5 p.m.
This year, for the first time, all polling stations in Brazil will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brasilia time. In places with a different time zone, the time is therefore adjusted according to the local time.
However, the rule does not apply to voters at polling stations abroad, where polling stations are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time.
