On Monday, EU foreign ministers will discuss additional options to support Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia. The event takes place in Luxembourg, starting at 9:30 am.

Among other things, the proposal by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell to provide another 500 million euros for the delivery of weapons and other military equipment is on the table.

Advice to EU foreign ministers: sanctions on Russia are likely to be a problem

Also, it should be about possible additional sanctions against Russia, which invaded Ukraine a good six weeks ago. One of the topics under discussion is deciding on an oil embargo following the ban on Russian coal imports.

EU foreign policy chief Borrell in Ukraine

Borrell was in the Ukrainian capital Kiev last Friday, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, to assure the government and people of the country of the EU’s full solidarity. The Spaniard then made it clear that he sees the need for more sanctions against the Russian energy sector, citing oil as an example. According to estimates by the think tank Bruegel, Russian oil worth around €450 million is still consumed in the EU every day.

Other topics at EU Foreign Affairs Ministers’ meetings

Other topics at the foreign ministers’ meeting include the situation in Mali, Libya and Yemen. Also, it should be about the Global Gateway Initiative launched last year to promote the EU’s international influence. Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) is expected to attend the meeting from Austria.
