Presidential election in France: The new edition of the old duel

Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen will face each other again in the second round on April 24. As five years ago, the televised debate on April 20 could be decisive.

As in 2017, Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen will face off in the second round. The incumbent president lived up to his role as favorite with his first place and 27.8% of the vote, the right-wing populist in second place with 23.1% announced her demands for a change of power. The starting position for the decisive round of April 24 is announced as a repetition of the electoral duel of five years ago.

Le Pen has a chance at revenge for her blatant defeat, she was clearly beaten by Macron in 2017 with 34 to 66 percent. But the balance of power has shifted since then. While Le Pen was quite isolated the last time before the second round, this time she can count on the support of right-wing extremist Éric Zemmour (7%). He called on his supporters to vote for Le Pen. She can also count on votes from conservative camp Valérie Pécresse, who trailed far behind with 4.8%.
