- “Everyone I talk to around him says they think he’s going to run. And not all of them, but many of them say his heart isn’t quite in it.
- “I think Trump misses the pomp and legal protection that the presidency has given him,” Haberman said in a separate interview with the New York Times
- She predicted Trump believes running for president could legally protect him, adding that it’s how he raises money
New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman said those close to Donald Trump predict he will run again in 2024, but many say his “heart is not in it.”
“The second he says he’s not, he’s irrelevant,” Haberman told Politico.
“Everyone I talk to around him says they think he’s going to run. And not all of them, but a lot of them say his heart isn’t entirely in it.’
The reporter added: “Well, those two things aren’t mutually exclusive. You can run and your heart is not in it. However, we’ve seen with other people who run when their hearts aren’t in it, voters can actually tell you that it has an impact on how you run.
Haberman, who has been spreading inside information about the Trump administration for years, released an investigative pamphlet Tuesday titled “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America.”

The potential for a former president to launch another campaign amid a slew of legal challenges and a refusal to accept the 2020 election results is “an unprecedented situation,” Haberman said.
“I think Trump misses the pomp and legal protection that the presidency has given him,” Haberman said in a separate interview with the New York Times.
“I also think he wants revenge on Biden, onhttps://www.cbsnews.com/news/maggie-haberman-on-donald-trump-confidence-man/d on the media and on a whole bunch of people . And he wants to be able to keep raising money and attracting attention, both of which go away if he doesn’t run,” Haberman added. “What I don’t realize is that he really wants to run another campaign, partly because he’s so much older and partly because he seems less committed in general. But that will become clear in the next few weeks or months.’
In a separate interview, the reporter who has covered Trump for decades since the height of his New York empire, Haberman said she believes the former president has “backed himself into a corner where he has to run.”
She predicted Trump believes running for president could legally protect him, adding that it’s how he raises money.
“I think he needs the protection that running for president (he thinks) would give him to fight what he calls a ‘witch hunt’ investigation. And it’s the way he raises funds and makes money. So much of his identity now revolves around being a politician. So I assume he will walk. But that doesn’t mean that even if he declares a candidacy, he sticks with it all the time.”
Haberman’s reporting has long puzzled the former president, leading him to nickname her “Maggot” Haberman, but he agreed to sit down with her three times over the course of her reporting on the book.
“I love being with her; She’s like my psychiatrist,” Trump reportedly told Haberman aides.
‘Here we go again! Another fake book has come out, this supposedly very boring and stale one by self-proclaimed head-fall, failure (unfunded liability!) New York Times author Maggie Hagerman,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“In it, she tells many made-up stories, without fact-checking or corroboration by anyone who would know, like me. In one instance, she lies about me wanting to fire my daughter Ivanka and Jared. FALSE, pure fiction. It never crossed my mind. I’m just having trouble struggling to make goosebumps like Maggie and all the others!’
