In the Toronto Blue Jays’ 5-1 win over the Orioles on Monday in Baltimore, Jose Berrios stopped a nasty slip by allowing just one run in a game that ended seven and a half innings due to rain.

Berrios (12-7) gave up just one run, three hits and as many walks in six innings of work. He had given up six and five points in his last two appearances.
It’s a fourth straight win for the Toronto side with two games remaining against the Orioles before the end of regular play. All it takes is a win — or loss to the Seattle Mariners late Monday night — to secure first place among teams drafted in the American League.
In the rhythm
The Jays quickly established their rhythm in this meeting. A single by Whit Merrifield in the second round of batting provided the first two runs, then Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added a run with his 32nd home run of the campaign.
Matt Chapman then added the insurance run by pushing Bo Bichette to the plate in the eighth period.
Jorge Mateo was the only local favorite to cross the plate with a sacrificial fly in the third inning.
Dean Kremer (8-7) allowed four runs, three of which were earned, six hits from safety and one free pass in six innings. He was responsible for the only unearned run of the game when he made a poor pitch in the fifth that allowed Merrifield to score.
Also, the day had started well for the Jays as Alek Manoah was named American League Pitcher of the Month for September.
