Renewables with the highest share of energy growth in 2021

According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), solar and wind dominated new entrants, accounting for 88 percent of the share of all green installations they joined last year.

The first of them led with a 19 percent increase, followed by wind power, which increased its generating capacity by 13 percent, he explained.

60 percent of the total was added in Asia, resulting in a total of 1.46 terawatts (TW) from renewable sources by 2021, it further pointed out.

China is the largest contributor, it added, adding 121 GW to the continent’s new capacity.

Europe (39 GW) and North America (38), led by the United States, took second and third place, according to the statement.

Renewable energy capacity grew 3.9 percent in Africa and 3.3 percentage points in Central America and the Caribbean, she added.

The source shared that hydropower growth has been steady in 2021 with the launch of several projects until reaching 1,230 GW.

Despite the encouraging global trend, according to Irena CEO Francesco La Camera, the agency’s Global Energy Transitions Outlook shows that the energy transition is far from being fast or widespread enough to avoid the dire consequences of climate change.

“Money invested in fossil fuel power plants produces unsatisfactory results, both for the survival of a nation and for the planet. Renewable energies are to become the norm worldwide. We must mobilize the political will to accelerate the path to 1.5 degrees Celsius,” he demanded.
