Stanford University women’s soccer captain Katie Meyer dies of suicide, authorities say

STANDFORD, Calif. (KABC) – Stanford goalkeeper Katie Meyer, who memorablely led Cardinal to victory in the NCAA College Cup 2019 game, has committed suicide, authorities said Thursday. She was 22.

“There is no indication of unfair play and it was determined that Mayer’s death was self-inflicted,” said a statement issued by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner. “Santa Clara County is not releasing additional information about the case at this time.

Stanford first announced the death of a student in one of its dormitories on Monday. On Tuesday, the university confirmed that this is the footballer, majoring in international relations.

Mayer stopped two penalties to lead Stanford to a 5-4 penalty shootout victory over North Carolina after a tieless draw in the 2019 championship game.

The native Californian drew attention to her animated holiday after the second save of the shootout, before her teammate Kiara Pickett broke through her attempt to hand over the trophy to Stanford.

“Katie was extremely dedicated to everything and everyone in her world. Her friends describe her as a team player who is bigger than life in all her pursuits, from choosing an academic discipline, she said, “it changed my worldview and the very important challenges that we have to work together to overcome the passion she brought to Cardinal’s women’s football program and to women’s sport in general, “Stanford said in a statement.

According to a biography page posted on the Stanford Athletics website, Mayer was born in Burbank and graduated from Century Academy in 2018 in Thousand Oaks.

The school says she attended and played football for Newbury Park High for three years.
