The Texans traded Deshaun Watson to the Browns last month but otherwise stayed out of the swap meet that sent starters flying through the league at the start of the offseason.

That leaves Davis Mills in line and nothing head coach Lovie Smith said Monday at the start of the team’s offseason program indicated any concerns about going all-in with the sophomore. Smith commended Mills for organizing practice sessions with his teammates and working to bring other players to Houston over the past few months.

Smith went on to say that he has a “belief” in what Mills can achieve now that he has completed a professional season.

“I believe in him Pep Hamilton, second year in the system, so many good things he’s done. And that as a rookie. The improvement you see from year one to year two is usually a big improvement and we’re going to see that from him,” Smith said.

The Texans have five of the top 80 picks in this year’s draft and Smith’s comments suggest they are being used to build a team around Mills rather than create competition at the position going into the summer.
