One in ten suffers serious long-term consequences after being infected by the corona virus, which can affect the entire body.
While most people survive a corona infection after a maximum of two weeks, the suffering continues for about ten percent afterward. At least that’s the WHO estimate. There is talk of Long Covid after four weeks and Post Covid after three months – and the symptoms couldn’t be more diverse.
In this context, extreme tiredness, exhaustion and lack of energy have been heard more frequently. Those affected are often barely able to get out of bed, a few steps are already an extreme feat of strength, and an oxygen device becomes a constant companion.

The whole body is affected
But this significant tiredness, known as fatigue, is far from the only problem. About 200 symptoms are attributed to Long Covid, which include memory lapses and neurological failures, as well as cardiac arrhythmias, muscle inflammation or thromboembolism. Shortness of breath and pain are part of everyday life for many of those affected.
However, the most common percentage is still fatigue syndrome at around 73%, followed by brain fog at 63% and shortness of breath at 55%. 47 percent of those affected suffer from headaches, muscle aches and difficulty concentrating occur in 45 percent. Heart arrhythmias (40 percent), dizziness (38 percent), sleep problems (36 percent) and hair loss (25 percent) should not be underestimated.
Cure in sight?
Data status and research progress are still modest regarding Long Covid. Thus, treatment options are still few and far between. However, there are points of contact. On the one hand, there are Long Covid outpatient clinics in various hospitals, but also specialist doctors and rehabilitation clinics.

However, the range of therapeutic approaches is as wide as that of symptoms: from respiratory therapy to olfactory training and psychological support, everything is included. In addition, research is being carried out into new treatment options – including “apheresis” treatment at the Vienna General Hospital.
