Maricopa County approves $17 million for affordable housing

PHOENIX — Hundreds of new housing units are coming to those who need a home in Maricopa County.

The district board of directors on Monday announced $17 million in funding for affordable housing projects, adding 610 affordable housing units to the valley’s housing stock.

Part of the plan includes a hotel remodel that will add 50 residential units and a new construction that will add 368 units in the West Valley and 192 units in central Phoenix.

To expand the affordable housing stock to meet the special needs of people making the transition from homelessness to housing, $8 million from Arizona Housing, Inc. will be used to upgrade an existing Van Buren Street hotel to convert to permanent, supportive housing in central Phoenix.

The property is undergoing improvements to ensure each unit is ready for longer term occupancy.

Upon completion, the remodeled property will offer 50 units that can be occupied by individuals and, in some cases, couples.

In addition to living quarters, the property will include on-site case management services to assist residents with any employment barriers and to match their needs with available programs and services.

Start of construction is planned for the end of 2022, expected completion date in summer 2023.

“I appreciate the innovative thinking and partnerships involved in transforming an old hotel into a place where people at risk of homelessness can live long-term,” said District 3 Chairman Bill Gates. “With creative Approaches like this, and the continued commitment and investment of our board, allow us to make a significant contribution to the affordable housing challenges facing our community.”

The Gorman Group was awarded $6 million to build 368 new affordable rental units on the southeast corner of 67th Avenue and Glendale Avenue.

The project, called Centerline on Glendale, will be implemented in two phases. 186 units will be built in phase one and another 182 units will come online in phase two.

Ulysses Development has been awarded $3 million to build a new 192-unit affordable rental complex.

The project, called Salt River Flats, will be built near Broadway and 14th Street in Phoenix. Estimated completion of the project is March 2024 and is available to those above 60% of the area’s median income ($42,660 for a family of three).
