High refugee numbers: German interior minister ‘concerned’

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser expressed concern about the increasing number of refugees entering the country via the Balkan route.

This worries her, because asylum seekers would have to be accommodated in Germany, in addition to the roughly one million war refugees from Ukraine, the SPD politician in the ARD’s “Morgenmagazin” said yesterday before a meeting with municipalities and states to better coordinate aid to refugees.

“Limit” immigration via the Balkan route

The minister said she will also present her EU-level commitment to “limit” immigration via the Balkan route. According to Faeser, the federal government is also looking at how it can also support municipalities with unused federal property.

There is still capacity to accommodate refugees. “Now it is a matter of coming together so that the federal, state and municipal governments can manage this together.” In early November, as announced, more federal aid would also be decided, she said.
