“The flags are at half-mast,” Saint-Robert Mayor Gilles Salvas said in an interview with LCN.

According to the mayor, this scene even shaped the emergency services.

“It marks the entire population,” said the man, who offered his condolences to the families of the victims.

According to Mr. Salvas, several accidents occur on Route 239 every year. The condition of the roadway would not be in question as it was on Sunday, but this road is always considered dangerous for its users regardless of the time of year, particularly because of its “dangerous turns.”

Mr. Salvas believes that the lack of workers on Quebec’s roads could contribute to increasing the risk of accidents.

“We hear that security is important, but the Sûreté du Québec is often understaffed (…) we insist.”

According to him, “You have to patrol the streets to keep people safe.”

“Fatal accidents like last Sunday. We cannot forgive ourselves,” he adds.

Since the municipality is not responsible for this road, he suggests working with the Ministry of Transport, the regional MP and the Sûreté du Québec.

He also proposes stricter speed limits to reduce accidents and increase safety.

“The community wants to work with everyone there to help secure this life-threatening bend.”
