In the Season 1 finale of Peacock’s hit series Girls5eva, the girl group raided the Jingle Ball stage to perform “4 Stars” after realizing they definitely belonged together again. They managed the guerrilla-style performance, but were led off the stage right after. It was a big risk, but the season 2 trailer shows that the stunt seems to have paid off.

As Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry) announces, they are “officially in album mode”. They’re thrilled to finally be writing their own material and doing things on their own terms – but there’s one big problem: the album is expected to be recorded in six weeks.

This time they also have to work with a fedora-wearing producer. “We’ve got another toxic guy on our hands,” says Dawn (Sarah Bareilles), who is wary of the producer after falling out with Alf Musik (Stephen Colbert) last season.

But he doesn’t seem to be as toxic as Dawn thinks because he hasn’t been doing creepy things like sniffing their chairs or “whipping his tail out,” as the group points out. Despite the time pressures and bumps along the way, it looks like the newly reunited version of Girls5eva is finally thriving. “Look how far we’ve come,” says an emotional Dawn.

One thing the trailer doesn’t address is what actually happened to Ashley (Ashley Park). Gloria made a comment in the season one finale about thinking Ashley faked her death. Although there is no evidence of this, speculation lingered among fans. So is there any chance that Ashley is alive and could come back? Well, it seems unlikely since the only glimpse of them in the trailer is in a flashback sequence where the group sings a typo, “We don’t want your average Joe, so you better roll in a Doug.”

The new season arrives on Peacock May 5 and begins with three episodes (the rest air weekly on Thursdays).
