By hosting Liz Truss for the first of the weekly talks between the sovereign and the prime minister (during his reign Elizabeth II maintained this tradition with 16 prime ministers), Charles missed one “good heavens” too many.
“Your Majesty, it’s a pleasure to see you again,” says Truss, being ushered into the royal apartments by the valet. “Here again?” replies the sovereign, referring to the conversation they had after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. And then, with his back to the Prime Minister, he can be heard whispering, “Oh, oh dear,” a typical phrase that translates to “Good heavens” in Italian. Noticing that the microphones are recording his movements (and his sighs), Carlo chases the cameramen away. But it’s too late and the video goes viral.
Under English rules, strictly observed by Elizabeth throughout her long reign, the sovereigns and royal family are not allowed to interfere in politics, take a stand or express opinions on the matter.
