Stephanie Lourenço was Paquita in Xuxa from 1999 to the end of 2002
Former Paquita Stephanie Lourenço has been open about her sexuality, revealing in an interview that she knew she was bisexual even as a teenager, but didn’t have the courage to publicly admit how she felt. She, who worked with Xuxa Meneghel, the presenter’s last group of stage assistants, from 1999 to late 2002, said she was still finding her feet.
“I had a desire to express myself, but I felt very oppressed because these were different times. I wasn’t able to speak openly about it until 20 years later, when I had the courage to come out to my parents. I still understand where I fit in,” she revealed in an interview with columnist Patricia Kogut.
Curitibana began her artistic career at the age of just 12, taking part in a few films alongside the eternal Rainha dos Baixinhos. She was a huge fan of hers but never thought she could be recognized as one of the Paquitas.
“I was a big fan of Xuxa. I think it’s impossible for a kid born at that stage not to be a fan too. She was part of my childhood. When they called me I thought it was a prank. Since there were several stages of testing. I never thought I would pass them. It was incredible to meet her. When she appeared in front of me, I was very emotional. It was hard to get used to them as an everyday thing,” she said.
Stephanie Lourenço is currently an actress and was at the Rio Festival this week to present Ian SBF’s thriller ‘Ciclo’, in which she plays a chef. At 35, she said, after leaving the Xuxa program, she dedicated herself to studying the performing arts and cinema. Recently, Curitibana was in São Paulo with the show What My Naked Body Tells You? where she is completely naked. Although she is comfortable, she noted that she struggled to accept her own body from a young age.
“It was a lot of pressure being so young and being on TV, I had to maintain my weight. I think I started dieting when I was 11, influenced by those teenage magazines. From a young age this pressure to lose weight starts and it’s very difficult to get it out of my head later. As much as I understand the logic of aesthetic printing today, I have a lot of issues with my body,” he said.
