Fear haters should beware of the new Netflix series The Midnight Club.
The show, a horror-mystery thriller that debuted October 7, has broken a world record for its abundance of jump scares, according to a Guinness World Records press release.
A jump scare describes the classic horror film trope when a moment of stillness is interrupted by a loud noise or lightning-fast cut intended to startle the viewer into surprise or fear. Think of Jason Voorhees jumping out of the water at the end of the 1980 classic Friday the 13th.
The first episode of “The Midnight Club” broke the record for most scripted jump scares in a single television episode, the press release said. The episode contains 21 spooky jumpscares.
The show’s creator, Mike Flanagan, joked that he wants to break the record in response to producers who, according to the publication, kept asking him to add more jump scares despite his desire.
Based on a 1994 novel by Christopher Pike, the horror series tells the story of eight teenagers with terminal illnesses. In a strange 1990s hospice, the teens begin meeting late at night to share disturbing and supernatural stories.
