‘The Kardashians’ premiere: How Kim Kardashian addresses Kanye West

Now the whole world knows who Kim Kardashian kissed while she was hosting “Saturday Night Live” — and it wasn’t her ex-husband Kanye West.

Though the couple was in the midst of divorce when Kardashian took the “SNL” stage in October 2021, it turns out she was actually considering having West as her musical guest that night.

In the first episode of The Kardashians — the famous family’s new show, which premiered on Hulu on April 14 — one of the main storylines focuses on Kardashian preparing for Saturday Night Live.

“I’ve been going back and forth since Kanye’s album came out,” Kardashian says on the episode after telling her family that Lorne Michaels invited her to host the show. “That would be epic if he was my musical guest. But then do I want my own moment?”

Ultimately, Kardashian explains why she chose not to have West perform as her musical guest.

“This is my first time, and I want it to be about me and not ‘How are they going to behave with each other?'” she says. But as she ponders, she tells her stylist, “It would be so cool for the kids to see mom and dad on ‘SNL’ together.”

In the episode, as she nervously prepares for “Saturday Night Live,” Kardashian admits she was upset by a tweet from Debra Messing — who Kardashian simply calls “a girl from ‘Will & Grace'” — who referred to Kardashian as Hostess criticized iconic show. (When NBC announced Kardashian as host last year, Messing was had tweeted: “Why Kim Kardashian? I mean, I know she’s a cultural icon, but “SNL” generally has hosts who are performers who are there to promote a movie, TV show, or album launch. Am I missing something?”)

Kardashian ended up making fun of West when she took the stage on SNL. “I married the greatest rapper of all time. Not only that, he’s the richest black man in America,” she said during her monologue. “A talented true genius who gave me four incredible children. So when I divorced him, you had to know that it all came down to one thing: his personality.”

In Hulu’s premiere episode, which filmed last fall, Kardashian and West are described as having solid co-parenting. In a scene where Kardashian worries that another version of her sex tape from two decades ago might be floating around without her consent, she calls West as her trusted confidant and gets advice from her ex over the phone. Also, the reality star’s last name is Stars and the businesswoman are still Kardashian West in the episode. Fast forward to today, and now that her divorce is finalized, her last name is simply Kardashian.

For anyone who’s been following the news lately, it seems that the relationship between the former couple has taken a turn. Kardashian has been verbally harassed on social media by West, who also spoke negatively about her boyfriend, Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson, in a music video and at events surrounding his album Donda 2. Amid the social media attacks, Kardashian filed a complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court alleging “emotional distress” and seeking expedited proceedings in their divorce, and the Grammys banned West from performing “regarding online conduct.” ‘, although he was nominated (and won two awards). Kardashian was declared legally single this March.

In Variety’s March cover story about the Kardashians’ move to Hulu, the Skims billionaire said she will address her divorce on the show but is keeping the details private to protect her family. “Being in the public eye and having public disagreements is never easy,” Kardashian told Variety. “I don’t think I would ever criticize my children’s father on my TV show. It’s just not really what I’m about and I just don’t think it would ever make me feel good.

“I’m going to go the big way from now on and hopefully always,” she explained in an interview last month. “But we’re seeing a lot of our parenting journey together, which I think is going to be really beautiful for people.”

Speaking of Davidson, the first episode of the Hulu show doesn’t delve into their relationship — yet! — but Kardashian shares he gave her advice before she joined “SNL,” which was the night they kissed during an onscreen skit for the comedy show.

“I met Pete Davidson at the Met Gala and I was like, ‘I’m so scared, I don’t know what I signed up for,'” Kardashian says in the episode. With a giddy laugh and smile, she tells the cameras, “He said, ‘Can you read cue cards? You’re good. You’re good.’ And I was like, ‘I can read.’”

Later in the first episode, while Kim is at a restaurant with Kourtney Kardashian and Khloé Kardashian, she turns to West again and tells her sisters that Kanye “wants to give up everything and dedicate his life to being my stylist.” She continues, “Kanye has always dressed me, always styled me.” She shares that he’s been emailing her looks since the early 2000s, adding, “It’s always been our thing. But there’s also a side of me that wants total independence.”

Kim, Kourtney and Khloé star in The Kardashians with their mother Kris Jenner and younger sisters Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner. All six women serve as executive producers.

The Kardashians doesn’t shy away from the real-life Kardashian sagas that have taken over the tabloids. From Khloé’s relationship with NBA player Tristian Thompson to Kylie’s second pregnancy to Kourtney’s engagement to drummer Travis Barker, season one is expected to cover all the drama. Finally, the Kardashians, who have been living their lives for the past 15 years since appearing on E! presented, made available to the public, made what they are today.

As Khloé recently told Variety, “I wish I never had to talk about it because it’s not fun to talk about. But it’s part of my life journey, so we’ll see it on the show.”
