Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) slammed the international community for focusing on the special military operation in Ukraine and denounced that crises elsewhere, including his native Ethiopia, are not receiving the same attention.possibly because the individuals concerned are not white.
Speaking at a news conference held via video conference, Ghebreyesus asked “whether the world really pays equal attention to the lives of black people and white people” as the current situations in Ethiopia, Yemen, Afghanistan and Syria represent only a “small part” of global concern around Ukraine.
“I have to be open and honest about what The world doesn’t treat humanity the same way‘ assured the head of the WHO, quoted by the AP. “Some are more equal than others,” he added.
Last month, the senior official pointed out that there is “nowhere in the world where the health of millions of people is at greater risk” than in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, noting that the situation in the region is “catastrophic ” was because the area was “cut off from the outside world” for around 500 days. “No food aid has been delivered since mid-December,” he said.
The armed conflict in Tigray began in November 2020 when a confrontation broke out between the regional authorities and the Ethiopian federal government.
This was specified by the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, last August that more than two million people have been displaced by the conflict and that millions of them urgently need humanitarian assistance such as water, food, shelter and medical care. According to Guterres, at least 400,000 residents of Tigre, including 100,000 children, are starving.
