Kyler Murray is unlikely to play for the Cardinals without a new contract

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is desperate to get a new contract before he takes to the field for the 2022 season.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Thursday that Murray is unlikely to play unless he gets a new deal, sources informed of the decision.

The Cardinals are yet to make a contract offer to Murray, whose agent Erik Burkhardt informed the team weeks ago that he was pulling his opening proposal off the table, Pelissero added.

It was a dramatic offseason for Murray and the Cards that began after the Pro Bowl, when Murray deleted his social media containing the Cardinals’ photos. The team responded in kind before the sides later reconciled in hopes of moving forward. Murray noted last month that he is not concerned about his future as cardinal.

However, with no apparent progress towards a new deal, Murray is reported to be making around $5.5 million in the fourth year of his rookie contract.

The 24-year-old two-time Pro Bowler got off to a hot start in 2021 and looked like an MVP nominee before he was injured, which forced the QB to miss three games. Murray and the Cards fought their way down the line, returned to the postseason and were blown out in the Super Wild Card round by eventual Super Bowl champion LA Rams.

After watching Aaron Rodgers, Deshaun Watson, Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr sign contract renewals worth $40 million or more a year over the past month, Murray wants his payday.

The Cardinals have insisted they have no plans to trade the former No. 1 overall, so we could be in for a long starring game in late July heading into training camp.
