QUITO, April 14 (RHC) – Former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas’s international defense team issued an urgent memo to two United Nations special rapporteurs on Thursday to denounce possible legal attempts against his client.
The report was submitted to the Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers and the Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.
The document specifies that “after the issuance of habeas corpus, there are risks that the lawfare claims against Jorge Glas will be repeated.”
The notice shows that Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso issued an order from the National Service for Comprehensive Attention to the People to present a habeas corpus appeal issued by Judge Javier Moscoso of Santa Elena Canton’s Multicompetent Judicial Unit.
Similarly, the defense team condemned Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo’s comments in which he imposed the need for constant surveillance of Glas.
With that in mind, the former vice president was banned from leaving his department in Guayaquil. Strict surveillance is exercised over him, which has violated even the most elementary norms of the right to privacy.
Taking these conditions into account, the defense team calls for “the necessary measures to be taken to ensure the fundamental right to a fair trial; and so that the elements related to the significant deterioration in their physical and mental health are taken into account.” (Source: Telesur)
