2022 NFL Mock Draft Eagles go on defense with 18

2022 NFL Mock Draft: Eagles go on defense with #18 pick

I know what you must be thinking. Howie draws a cornerback in the first round? Unlikely. Absurd. let me finish We have an obvious need at Cornerback and have had for a while. However, in this mock draft scenario, we are able to add a solid piece to the defense. Booth here is a no-brainer, as is DeVonta Smith. Booth is an elite talent and a part that will make cornerback less necessary for a while. Let’s get down to the details.

overview

Andrew Booth Jr. joined Clemson as a 5-star recruit and scholar. Booth met his grades at Clemson with high marks. Booth Jr. will provide the Eagles with an exciting blend of size, athleticism, instincts, physicality, ball ability and competitive strength, all qualities that will make him a great Eagles player for years to come. He has a fiery fighting spirit and plays like an alpha dog. When it comes to areas where Booth Jr. can improve, Booth Jr. can clean up his failed tackles and add some zone coverage. While he may never have been a coward as a tackle, I’ve seen a few moments where he leaves his feet with too much space between himself and the ball carrier or doesn’t have enough control to complete the tackle. Booth Jr. can do much better in the zone, squeezing routes and deviating from his landmarks when necessary. His ideal role is in the outside corner that the Eagles need and he’s versatile in any scheme but does his best in man marking.

In his freshman year with the Eagles, Booth has a chance to fight for a starting spot depending on whether the Eagles sign the Honey Badger and add someone else. I see he has the level to be the hitter at cornerback; The Eagles searched for years, and it paid off for Howie Roseman and the team to break their rule of not drafting a cornerback in the first round.

Skills

Strengthen

Tackling: Booth is an aggressive and energetic tackler with dynamic click and lock abilities. He routinely performs impact tackles outside of his frame, and he is never passive when it comes to stopping the run or completing a routine tackle.

Versatility: Booth has been hired by Clemson to execute a variety of coverage systems, including man, zone, soft press, and tight press man coverage. Booth Jr.’s abilities have no limitations or matchup issues. Booth is experienced in kick-off, punt return and punt coverage sessions.

Competitive Strength: Booth is a formidable competitor. He plays an aggressive and physical football that always leads him to be close to the football. Booth Jr. struggles on every rep and his engine always overheats. It’s obvious that Booth Jr. doesn’t want to give up an inch of the field. Talented as he is, his ideal is his fiery fighting spirit.

Good Athletics: Booth has an explosive athletic profile and manages his speed effectively. It has the close-range speed needed to copy and match routes, and it has the momentum to carry receivers across the field. Its movement speed abilities are powerful and without limitations.

Football IQ: Booth’s football knowledge shows as he defends the run, reflecting the distances in man coverage and his general spatial awareness. He’s rarely panicked or thrown out of position, and he usually has a clean record when it comes to fouls.

Run Defense: Booth is a fantastic run defender and is passionate about getting involved. He understands running fits and will aggressively and physically do the necessary dirty work, taking over the block to throw runs inside and maintain the outside effect. I like his makeup when a run was stopped and it could see him play with the Eagles both outside and in the slot.

Length: Booth is a decent size and he knows how to count it. He usually ends his tackles outside of his frame by increasing his tackle radius due to his arm length. Booth also maximizes his size when hitting the soccer ball with precise timing and he is able to fully stretch while maintaining full body control.

Man Coverage: Booth is a man coverage corner with loose hips, quick feet and excellent route anticipation skills. He does well to read trunks and stay connected as routes lengthen. He has all the physical traits required to be our coverage corner for shutdown man.

Press Reporting: His press reporting skills are among the best in his class. He has a great back peddle that allows him to quickly adapt to the press and close passes close to him. He uses his arms to tape receivers onto their shoulders before quickly tipping his hips, following their route and adjusting to land contested catches.

weaknesses

Zone Coverage Skills: Booth does decent zone coverage, hitting the backfield and working the trajectories. Booth Jr. has plenty of room to grow in understanding when to stray from landmarks and adapt on the fly. Too often last season, the Tigers’ defense covered grass in the zone. Basic knowledge of where the legitimate receiver is located, the routes those receivers take and eliminating threats would have improved the coverage distance. He occasionally fell victim to this. Although Booth Jr. has been attacked a few times due to gaps in cover where he was expecting to pass a receiver to a respectable defender, he is better at blocking routes.

Tackling: While I’ve said before that he’s a great tackler, he’s not immune to the occasional missed tackle, which often comes from arriving way too hot or leaving his feet with too much space between himself and the receiver , resulting in a miss tackles.

Football IQ: Booth Jr. has a lot of room to grow in terms of processing in zone coverage and customization. He often beat experienced route runners and turned deeper into routes. He gave up 300 yards and two touchdowns.

Recovery Speed: He takes too long to shift into second gear when knocked into cover, meaning he stayed defeated.

Final Thoughts

I think Andrew Booth Jr. will be an excellent shutdown corner for us. He has the skills and he will have the time he needs to develop them. I believe if Booth Jr. falls, Howie will draft him despite that team’s longstanding reluctance to draft CBS in the first round. It’s a no-brainer when the draft falls like this community mock draft, just like Devonta Smith did in the last draft. It was great to finally pick for the Eagles and despite that trade we made it through with the Saints. If you disagree with me, please let me know in the comments below and please type yes.
