Politburo member and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla sent via Twitter the Cuban people’s solidarity with sister nation South Africa for the damage caused by torrential rains and severe flooding caused by extreme weather.
“Our deepest condolences and solidarity with the people and government of South Africa for the loss of life and damage caused by torrential rain and flooding in KwaZulu-Natal province. These should be extended to include relatives of the victims,” stressed the Chancellor.
According to DW, the South African region was hit by heavy rains for several days, which claimed around 306 lives in KwaZulu-Natal. The water has flooded homes, leaving many citizens incommunicado.
The death toll is expected to continue rising as search and rescue operations continue in the province.
The South African President also stated that the region would soon be declared a disaster area.
The South African Weather Service declined to attribute the current downpour to climate change but said such heavy rain events could become more frequent, Reuters reported.
