Something unusual appeared on the screens of the baggage handlers at Munich Airport, prompting them to immediately notify the customs authorities. When they opened the luggage, their surprise turned out to be justified: Inside was a live albino alligator, about three feet long and completely wrapped in a plastic band. Only the nostrils were uncovered.
The suitcase belonged to a 42-year-old businessman from the US and was en route to Singapore who planned to smuggle the reptile.
Had it not been spotted by ground security, the albino alligator would most likely have died in flight. Instead, he was released by border police with the help of a veterinarian and later taken to a reptile shelter. The animal is fine now.
The owner of the suitcase is being investigated for illegal animal trade.
