The gap is narrowing: Former President Lula is credited with 52% of voter intentions expressed, versus 48% for the outgoing head of state, according to a recent poll by benchmark institute Datafolha released on Wednesday, October 19. Far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is running for re-election, narrowly overtakes his opponent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva eleven days before the second round of the October 30 presidential election.

In a previous poll released Oct. 14, Lula was credited with 53% of voting intentions, versus 47% for Jair Bolsonaro. In the first ballot on October 2, the former left-wing president won 48% of the vote against 43% for his rival.

On this occasion, the various polling institutes were widely criticized for not having predicted the peak value of the outgoing President, to whom they attributed a maximum of 37%. On the home stretch of an election campaign between disinformation and allegations of cannibalism or pedophilia, candidates try to persuade undecided voters and those who say they will vote blank or zero.
