Argentina Elda Cerrato wins Plastic Arts Award

An award given by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports in recognition of the body of work of an Ibero-American artist in the field of plastic arts, endowed with 100,000 euros.

Discreet figure, eventually awarded the National Artistic Career Prize in Argentina in 2019, Cerrato, sentimental partner of musician Luis Zubillaga (1928-1995), was a longtime professor at the University of Buenos Aires.

The jury summarized the career of the Argentine artist as follows:

«His work crosses seemingly disjointed territories: spiritual quest, esoteric investigations, radical politicization, anticipation of art and a special call for attention to the fragility of democratic institutions in Latin America.»

The Spanish Ministry of Culture indicated that Cerrato, born in Asti, Italy in 1930, is a visual artist, teacher and researcher living and working in Buenos Aires.

“It speaks of memory on the fringes to explain a path illuminated by the fringes of movements, institutions and hegemonic artistic currents,” the jury said of the arguments for the Velázquez Prize.

Despite her advanced age, Elda Cerrato is currently working on the audiovisual project “Family Reunion” with her son Luciano Zubillaga.

He has had 21 solo exhibitions in Argentina, the Caracas Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Museum of the Americas, the United States, several in Europe, and eight international biennials.
